HOW IT WORKS
How does an outside furnace heat my home?
The outside wood
furnace is designed to save the most energy and provide the most comfortable
heating available. It heats your home by heating a tank filled with water,
which surrounds the firebox of the outside furnace. The furnace is
basically a non-pressurized boiler with an atmospheric vent. This hot
water is then circulated to your heating system on demand from your thermostat.
The system can be forced air, baseboard heat, radiant, or any type of heating
system.
How does the furnace heat water for household use?
A cold water supply line goes to the
outside furnace to replace any water that evaporates. The supply line also
connects to a heat exchanger inside the water tank. Pressure on the supply
line forces water through the exchanger when you open a hot water faucet inside
your home, sending the heated water to your hot water heater.
What changes will occur in my home?
An additional thermostat is sometimes added to control a pump or fan.
A trunk line must enter the house from the furnace underground to the plumbing
area.
Valves/water to water heat exchanger may be added to your hot water heater.
How do I choose the location for my
furnace?
Pick a high rather than low piece of ground to set your furnace if possible.
Consider the wind direction so the smoke is not blowing toward your home.
Most importantly, place the furnace new your wood pile or where you would like
your wood to be.
Your outside furnace can be as close as 10 feet or as far away as necessary, not
to exceed 600 feet on larger units.
